Projects
Working collaboratively with our all-star team we’ve helped farms, schools and neighborhoods install orchards and agro-forestry projects. Together, we’re joining the movement to help grow Hawaii’s diversified agriculture future by increasing the supply of key crops, such as mango, avocado, and cacao crops and other leading crops that grow well in an agro-forestry setting.
Farms
We’re working closely with Hawaii Avocado Association (HAA) and Hawaii Farmers Union United (HFUU) to bolster Hawaii’s avocado industry. These efforts include a survey to determine the supply availability of locally grown avocados, including identification of the cultivars (varieties) being grown at various elevations. This information will be used to estimate the seasonal availability of cultivars available to local consumers and markets. The ultimate goal of this project is to increase the supply consistency of commercial-grade avocado and encourage consumers, wholesalers and retailers to buy locally. Currently the majority of dollars Hawaii spends on avocados go to Mexico, Chile or California.
Kahumana Organic Farms is using the mango seeds they process through their community kitchen to grow root stock, graft, and install 200 mango tree varieties - allowing them to increase their mango production by using varieties that extend the seasonal harvest and doubling their orchard size using high-density, trellis planting methods, and various alley cropping practices. Kahumana farmers and interns are also increasing their capacity to graft, grow and maintain high-production, quality fruit trees.

Neighborhoods & Homesteaders
We focus on 1 acre+ fruit tree orchard projects for homesteaders and neighborhood shared spaces.
Schools & Community Gardens
Ocean Friendly Garden in Kakaako is a collaborative project with Surfrider Foundation’s Ocean Friendly Gardens, Permablitz and Kamehameha Schools. We’ve worked to design, install and host informational workdays and videos for this urban garden.
Thanks to funding form Kaulunanai’s Urban and Community Forestry Program, housed within DLNR, we will be working closely with Kokua Foundation to help design, grow and install fruit trees for their community farm in Haleiwa Town.
